Healthy Incentives Program (HIP)

What Is HIP?

The Healthy Incentives Program is a state-funded food security program available to households that receive SNAP. HIP provides up to $80 monthly that can be spent on local produce that is purchased directly from farmers at a farm stand or farmers market. It helps build a stronger local food ecosystem by benefiting families, farmers, and the local economy.

The amount per household is dependent on household size.

1-2 people: $40 per month

3-5 people: $60 per month

6+ people: $80 per month

HIP benefits do not roll over to the next month. It must be used within the calendar month it was issued.

HIP is available as long as there is at least $0.01 (one cent) in the SNAP balance.

How It Works

When a participating vendor runs the SNAP card at the point of sale, eligible purchases are deducted first from the HIP balance. If your purchase exceeds your HIP balance, SNAP funds pay for the remainder.

Note: HIP is only available for regular SNAP accounts. Sun Bucks (formerly Summer EBT) do not accrue HIP benefits.

HIP and REC Farmers Markets

RECWorcester (Regional Environmental Council) has worked especially hard to make HIP accessible and easy to use. All REC Farmers Markets, including the Mobile Farmers Markets, can process HIP transactions. They even have an option for folks to order online for pickup at a scheduled Farmers Market. See REC’s current Farmers Market schedules and options below. To learn more, visit RECWorcester Farmers Markets.

Do I need to sign up for HIP?

There is no special sign-up for HIP. If you live in Massachusetts and get SNAP benefits, you are automatically able to participate in HIP.

What do I need to know before using HIP?

  • Make sure there are SNAP benefits left on your EBT card. If you have a balance of zero, you will not be able to use HIP until you have SNAP benefits available again.
  • Check to be sure the farmers market you plan to attend has vendors that participate in HIP.
  • Many farmers markets have their own system for tallying up HIP purchases. At some markets, for example, individual vendors may not participate directly in HIP. Instead, the market itself is a HIP vendor. At those markets, you shop as usual, but inform the vendor that you’ll be using HIP. They or the market manager will explain the process to you.

Where can I use HIP?

You can earn HIP incentives at participating:

  • Farmers’ markets (where some or all vendors may participate in HIP)
  • Farm stands
  • Mobile markets
  • Community supported agriculture (CSA) farm share programs

Traditional grocery and convenience stores do not participate in HIP.

How can I find a HIP vendor near me?

Find vendors that participate in HIP near you through the DTA finder.

You can search by month, day of week open, or “open today”. You can also search by city, county or device geolocation (“my location”). You will be able to see what order options vendors have, including availability of curbside pickup and delivery.
